Sexual Struggles

What is Uncontrollable Sexual Behavior and How Do I know if this is Me?

Uncontrollable sexual behavioris described as a persistent need to engage in sexual behaviors in a compulsive or hypersexual way that becomes problematic. It is the struggle with impulse control, that presents as excessive focus on sexual behaviors. The person finds it extremely difficult to control the urges, whether they engage in the behaviors with others or with themselves. The person continues to engage in the behaviors despite the consequences that eventually occur. Often, the individual convinces themselves that “everything is ok”; especially while they are moving toward engaging in the sexual activity of interest and/or, while they are engaged in activity. It is not uncommon that after the engaged activity Is over, guilt and shame set in. This process happens over and over again.

Through time, with the continual engagement in the cycle for excitement and self-soothing, deep inner turmoil slowly builds. With the continued behaviors, deep consequences begin to occur through time as they find themselves unable to stop. The person spends an inordinate amount of time focused on planning, thinking and arranging his/her life to be able to find ways to engage in the sexual behaviors. They often are living a “double life”, keeping their obsessive sexual activities a secret to the loved ones, colleagues, and others around them in their daily lives. The involvement in the sexual activities become so great that the individual violates their own inner morales and values that feeds the guilt and shame they hold. Work and home productivity suffers, family relationships become secondary and suffer, finances and other personal life tasks and engagements become less and less tended to.
